White Industries is now offering a 48 points of engagement (POE) freehub option – and best of all, it’s retrofitable to all of their hubs made in the last 20 years.  This upgrade doubles the POE, reducing the free play from 14 degrees down to 7.5 degrees.  Faster engagement is a big help in technical mountain biking, and on a road bike it’ll make for a more responsive feeling wheelset.  Stomp the pedals, and you get instant go without having to wait for the freehub to engage.

Compared to the stock 24 POE, the upgrade has basically no effect on noise or drag.  With my own wheelset I converted the upgrade spun just a *tiny* bit slower than the stock set up, but that could just be because of all the fresh grease.  With some miles and time to push the excess grease out I imagine it’ll be no different than stock.

The new kit includes a 48T drive ring and new pawls and springs.  The new pawls have two sets of teeth that engage simultaneously to make ensure there’s no slipping or skipping.

All WI hubs can now be had with the 48T drive ring, and I can install it in your existing hub for $65 plus tax and/or shipping.  Shoot me an e-mail or give me a call to schedule having yours converted.

DO NOT TAKE THE WHEEL APART unless you want me to build the hub up into a new rim for you!  The only way to get the torque needed to remove the 24T drive ring is if the hub is built into a wheel and you use the rim for leverage.
