Frederic has been riding a set of Roval Traverse Fattie wheels, and they’re just not up to the task. The Rovals have a really low spoke count (24/28) with really light spokes in an attempt to keep weight down, and they’re just not enough wheel for Frederic and the aggressive riding he does. Frederic does like the wide rims though, and wanted that in his new wheels, but he wanted more stiffness and a faster engaging hub. The WTB ASYM i29 rims were used because they are wide with a 29mm inner width but the weight is still pretty reasonable. The offset spoke bed raises the spoke tension on the low tension side of the wheel, which improves durability. The Hadley hubs are made in the USA, have top notch fit and finish, fast engagement with 72 points, and they’re a fairly quiet hub when coasting. 32 Wheelsmith DB14 double butted spokes are used on each wheel to keep things nice and stiff and fun to ride. These new wheels are heavier than the Rovals, but the rear hub has way faster engagement and the higher spoke count and thicker spoke gauge means a much stiffer set of wheels, they’ll track better over rough terrain when things get fast and rowdy, and they won’t make “barking” noises under heaving braking like the Rovals do.
