Scott has a fixed gear commuter/’round town bike that he finds himself spinning out too often.  Instead of changing the gear ratio (and losing some low end climbing ability) he decided to add an extra gear.  The Sturmey Archer S2 hub is a neat solution for a bike like this.  It looks like a single speed hub, there’s just one cog, no shifter or shift cables.  But, it is in fact a 2 speed internally geared ‘kick back’ hub, meaning you shift by back pedaling a bit.  It’s a great way to add some range to a single speed bike without cluttering up the clean lines of a SS.  I laced it up to an H Plus Son Archetype rim, which is anodized black after the brake track is machined.  It’s wide, stiff, and extremely well made.  DT Swiss Revolution spokes are plenty stiff enough for this application, but help keep some weight down compared to beefier spokes.  I used brass spoke head washers on all the spokes because the holes in the Sturmey Archer flanges were quite large, 3.0mm, which doesn’t give a good tight fit between the spoke head and elbow.  A poor fit there can lead to early spoke breakage.  The soft brass washers deform under the spoke head into the hole helping tighten up the fit.  They look kinda cool too, I think.

Scott also has a pair of MTB wheels on order, I’ll post those once all the parts arrive and they get built up!
