Kevin wasn’t too stoked with the wheels that came on his bike.  He wanted something with a wider and stiffer rim, and something durable since he enjoys going off to ride the rocky and rooty trails of West Virginia.  But he also didn’t want to weight down that nice Pivot with some overbuilt boat anchors.  The WTB KOM i23 rim was chosen as it’s a nice balance of weight, width, and stiffness.  It has a 23mm internal width and uses a UST like tubeless bead for a reliable and hassle free tubeless experience.  The Hope hubs tick all the boxes: reasonable weight, convertible axles, reliable, well made, and fast engagement.  Wheelsmith DB14 spokes are a touch lighter than the DT Swiss Competitions I use on most MTB builds, but they’re stiffer than the even-lighter DT Swiss Revolutions.  Paired with the fairly stiff 26″ rim they’re a good fit for Kevin’s weight and riding style.
